SUMMARY:Book Club: Plato’s Republic (Part I: What is Justice?)
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, 25th of July\, we’re going to begin a two-part discussion of Plato’s Republic\, one of the most influential works in the history of philosophy. For this first session\, we’ll focus on Books I–V. \nWritten around 375 BCE\, the Republic is Plato’s most famous dialogue and a foundational text of Western political thought. The dialogue begins with a seemingly simple question: What is justice? As Socrates examines and challenges various answers\, the discussion gradually expands into an ambitious inquiry into politics\, ethics\, education\, human nature\, and the ideal society. \nIn the first half of the work\, Plato explores competing views of justice\, critiques the pursuit of power and self-interest\, and develops the blueprint of his famous ‘ideal city’. Along the way\, he raises provocative questions about education\, censorship\, social class\, gender equality\, political leadership\, and the relationship between the individual and the state. \nMore than two thousand years later\, many of these questions remain surprisingly relevant. Is justice valuable in itself\, or only because of its consequences? Should political leaders be chosen for their wisdom rather than their popularity? What role should education play in shaping citizens? Can a society ever be truly just? \nLet’s discuss! \nPlato (c. 428–348 BCE) was an ancient Greek philosopher and a student of Socrates. He founded the Academy in Athens\, one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in the Western world. Through his dialogues\, Plato explored enduring questions about knowledge\, morality\, politics\, beauty\, and the good life\, profoundly influencing philosophy\, science\, and political thought for more than two millennia. \n⸻ \nAnyone is welcome to join! No background in philosophy is needed. Before the meeting\, please read Books I–V of the Republic\, think about them\, and note any passages you find especially interesting\, challenging\, or worth discussing. We’ll share our thoughts and interpretations during the meeting. \nThis is the first of two discussions dedicated to the Republic. In our second session\, we’ll discuss Books VI–X\, including the philosopher-king\, the Allegory of the Cave\, the Theory of Forms\, and Plato’s reflections on art\, knowledge\, and the soul. \nOrganizational notes:\n📍 Attendance is free\n⏳ Spots are limited\n🔗 Please register via the Meetup app (link below) so we know how many people to expect and can reserve a table accordingly \nhttps://meetup.com/house_of_wisdom

SUMMARY:Globe Creative Writing Group
DESCRIPTION:Globe Creative Writing Group was established in October of 2016. We meet weekly at the Globe Bookstore on Mondays from 19-21. Feel free to come by and introduce yourself\, whether or not your facebook request has been acknowledged by us. We receive many requests\, and prefer to accept those we know will contribute later on. :). \n\n\n\nWe are an eclectic group composed of various writers practising a range of techniques. We’ve so far been writing short fiction\, poetry\, essays\, genre fiction\, experimental prose\, surrealism\, playwriting\, screenwriting\, non-fiction as well as long-term projects. \n\n\n\nThis group relies on and sustains itself through thoughtful and productive critique. During our meetings\, we discuss each member’s submission (should they choose to submit that week) in depth. At the end of each meeting\, a prompt is assigned that we will base our submissions for the next week on. Transcending the prompt\, of course\, is always possible. If you would like feedback on a long-term project or a submission that isn’t related to the prompt\, feel free to do so. \n\n\n\nRules and Guidelines for Submissions:\n\n\n-To ensure everyone can give\, and get\, quality critiques\, we will review no more than 8 submissions per week.\n\n\n-Please submit by Saturday at the latest. As many of us have jobs\, families\, holidays etc.\, we need ample time to give thoughtful feedback and criticism to each submission. If you submit later than the Saturday deadline\, don’t worry! We can save your work to critique the next week.\n\n\n-If you do submit\, please be present at the meeting that your work will be critiqued. If you cannot make it\, please let the group know via the Facebook group. If we take the time to critique\, we want to know that you will be there to accept feedback. Again\, if you cannot make it\, we will save your submission for the next week.\n\n\n-Please do not submit work that is longer than 1\,500 words. We want to make sure everyone receives ample time to discuss and is not overwhelmed by the amount of content they will need to read. Because of this\, please try to adhere to a no more than 1\,500-word standard. \n\n\n\nAI Disclaimer\nWriters: If you’ve used AI in your work\, please inform us and tell us to what extent you have used AI.\nCritiques: Please refrain from using AI to assist in your critiques. We are sharing our work with others because we want your perspective\, and we want to b\n\n\nPrompts are meant to be broad in order to maximize creativity. We have had long-term projects devised from simple prompts and continue to! It’s a way for us to break free of our comfort zones as writers. Don’t be afraid!\n\n\nAs a group\, we also encourage publishing work\, whether it be in Prague or outside. Feel free to post any publishing opportunities you think would fit the group or anyone in it. So far we have had several prize winners and magazine publications from group members. This group is fundamentally about encouragement! \n\n\n\nAny other questions\, please send us a message on Facebook 🙂\n\n\nHappy writing!

SUMMARY:Literární Zarafest slaví 26 let- představení programu a hostů festivalu
DESCRIPTION:Literární Zarafest dospěl letos do svého 26. ročníku.

SUMMARY:Agnes Obel (DK) - Prague
DESCRIPTION:Jedna z nejoriginálnějších osobností současné evropské hudby se vrací do České Republiky. Dánská zpěvačka\, skladatelka a producentka Agnes Obel vystoupí 31. Její hudba se pravidelně objevuje ve filmech\, seriálech a hrách — od True Detective přes The Last of Us až po Dark Souls III. \n🎟️ Vstupenky budou v prodeji v sítích Ticketmaster a GoOut. Prodej vstupenek pro širokou veřejnost bude zahájen 30. ledna 2026 v 10.00. \nKoncert pořádá agentura Charmenko Czechia.

SUMMARY:Água Viva by Clarice Lispector
DESCRIPTION:Lispector at her most philosophically radical. A meditation on the nature of life and time\, Água Viva (1973) shows Lispector discovering a new means of writing about herself\, more deeply transforming her individual experience into a universal poetry. In a body of work as emotionally powerful\, formally innovative\, and philosophically profound as Clarice Lispector’s\, Água Viva stands out as a particular triumph. \nWe are the Prague In-Person Book club\, we will meet at 4pm on Saturday 1st August to discuss the book. \nIf you would like to join please write to Lydia Titterington or contact@pragueliterarycalendar.com so we can reserve a spot for you.

SUMMARY:FOMO – filmy\, které si nechcete nechat ujít
DESCRIPTION:AMADEUS\n„Odpusť mi\, Mozarte\, to já jsem tě zahubil\,“ šeptá uprostřed noci starý a na smrt nemocný muž. Píše se rok 1823 a někdejší skladatel vídeňského dvora Antonio Salieri vzpomíná na svého nadanějšího rivala\, jehož život sám pomocí intrik ukrátil. \nKdyž se Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart objevil v roce 1781 ve Vídni\, předcházela jej pověst zázračného dítěte. Forman ho představuje jako dětinského a arogantního mladíka neobyčejného hudebního nadání\, který o deset let později umírá v bídě a opovržení. Stejnou rychlostí\, jakou získává slávu a skládá hudbu bez jediné opravy not\, vyvolává i veřejné skandály a budí pohoršení.

SUMMARY:Poetry Talks Prague with Sakari Happonen. The Plague Column by Jaroslav Seifert.
DESCRIPTION:Czech has an exceptionally rich literary history that makes it the incredible country we all love today. One of the writers that forms Czech literary identity is Jaroslav Seifert. \nJaroslav Seifert was born on Bořivojova in Zizkov. We will meet at Parukářka to discuss 3 poems from The Plague Column (attached on this link here). You can read these in any language you can find. Sakari is reading the Finnish translation\, we will discuss in English. \nThrough discussion we use each other to help us understand the poem. You do not need to be an expert\, you do not need to be that familiar with poetry\, all you need is curiosity and through discussion we can learn about ourselves\, our cultures and Seifert and the Czech identity. \nAny questions please reach out to contact@pragueliterarycalendar.com or on the facebook event. If there are any changes to the event we will write on Prague Literary Calendar event page. \nMore information and context below from Sakari Happonen. \n__________________________________________________\nWe invite you to join us for an evening of poetry readings and discussion about the Czech Nobel Prize in Literature laureate\, the grand old man of Czech poetry and a poet of death and desire\, Jaroslav Seifert (1901–1986)\, in his birthplace of Žižkov. Seifert was a poet of the people\, whose memorial stands at the Lipanská tram stop. He was also a key figure in Poetism\, an important poetic and artistic movement in Czechoslovakia that formed part of the avant-garde. \nDuring the evening\, we will discuss the section “The Plague Column”  from Jaroslav Seifert’s poetry collection The Plague Column (Morový sloup). The reading material is here. Please send us a message if you have any questions or encounter any problems accessing the material. \nThe discussion will take place in English. We encourage you to read the poem(s) in your native language and bring your own unique perspectives and interpretations to the discussion. Sakari Happonen\, a Finnish writer and poet in residence\, will bring a Finnish translation of Seifert’s The Plague Column (Ruttopylväs\, translated by Hannu Ylilehto\, 1985) to the evening. It is currently the only Czech poetry collection intended for adult readers to have been translated into Finnish. \nDuring the event\, we will hear a reading of “The Plague Column” in at least two different languages. We are still looking for a local Prague reader who could read the poem in its original language (Czech)\, so if you or anyone you know might be interested\, please get in touch. 🙂 \nIt is important to note that this is not a lecture\, but an evening where we discover and learn from each other. Bring your own knowledge\, perspectives\, and curiosity to the discussion! As the discussion will take place in a group setting\, it is important to treat everyone with respect and listen attentively. This evening dedicated to Seifert offers a unique and rare opportunity to better understand the movements — poetic and otherwise — that have shaped the Czech Republic into what it is today. \nCzech writer Bohumil Hrabal once said that young poets write about death\, while old fogies write about sex. In Seifert’s case\, both are equally true\, and nowhere else is this more apparent than in his collection The Plague Column (1978). If possible\, we highly encourage all attendees to read the entire collection\, rather than just the “The Plague Column” section\, as this will provide the reader with a deeper understanding of the collection’s topics and themes as a whole. Any worthwhile poetry collection strives to be more than the sum of its parts\, with warp threads running beneath the reading experience — a kind of underlying dramaturgy that binds the poems together. The Plague Column is perhaps Seifert’s most cohesive collection\, in which individual poems build upon one another to create a more unified whole. Send us a message if you would like to read the entire collection; we can provide a copy. \nFURTHER READING: \nJoseph Grim Feinberg has written on Seifert and the Czech interwar avant-garde for those who want delve deeper: https://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/primerjalna_knjizevnost/article/download/9784/9201 \nAbout the Seifert monument: https://umeleckepamatky.udu.cas.cz/en/object/101-monument-to-jaroslav-seifert \nNobel Prize website — four complete poems:\nAutobiography / An Umbrella from Piccadilly / Fragment of a Letter / To Be a Poet \nkresadlo.cz —\nhttp://kresadlo.cz/seifert.htm \nRadio Prague International —\nhttps://english.radio.cz/czech-books-you-must-read-8506310/14 \nPoetry Dispatch blog — \njaroslav seifert | štàsten & happy \n \nAllPoetry.com\nhttps://allpoetry.com/Jaroslav-Seifert \nPoetry Foundation — biographical page only\, no full poems:\nhttps://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/jaroslav-seifert \nKavárna Slavia (Seifert’s poem about Cafe Slavia\, and the importance of french poet Apollinaire for the Czech poets) \nKavárna Slavia

SUMMARY:Body as a Medium Life Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Join us every Thursday for a relaxed and welcoming life drawing session\, a space to slow down\, observe\, and connect through drawing. \nThis is a friendly\, low-pressure gathering open to all levels\, from complete beginners to experienced artists. Whether you’re looking to improve your skills\, rebuild a creative habit\, or simply spend a mindful evening doing something different\, you’re very welcome. \nEach session includes a series of short warm-up poses\, gradually building into longer poses\, giving you space to explore gesture\, proportion\, and expression at your own pace. We’ll take a short break halfway through to rest and reset. \nWe also work with professional life models\, and the atmosphere is always respectful\, calm\, and supportive — the focus is on creating a safe environment for both artists and models. \n• Bring your own drawing materials\n• Duration: 18:00 – 20:00\n• Contribution: 250 CZK (used to fairly compensate the model) \nWe’re slowly building a small creative community here in Prague\, and it would be lovely to have you join us. Looking forward to drawing with you!
