SUMMARY:Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo
DESCRIPTION:We usually discuss and arrange details in whatsapp – if you would like to join please message Lydia Titterington or email Prague Literary Calendar contact@pragueliterarycalendar.com\, and we can send you the link to join. \nA classic of Mexican modern literature about a haunted village. \nAs one enters Juan Rulfo’s legendary novel\, one follows a dusty road to a town of death. Time shifts from one consciousness to another in a hypnotic flow of dreams\, desires\, and memories\, a world of ghosts dominated by the figure of Pedro Páramo – lover\, overlord\, murderer. \nRulfo’s extraordinary mix of sensory images\, violent passions\, and unfathomable mysteries has been a profound influence on a whole generation of Latin American writers\, including Carlos Fuentes\, Mario Vargas Llosa\, and Gabriel García Márquez. To read Pedro Páramo today is as overwhelming an experience as when it was first published in Mexico back in 1955.

SUMMARY:Blood Meridian by Cormack McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:Set in the anarchic world opened up by America’s westward expansion\, Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is an epic and potent account of the barbarous violence that man visits upon man. Through the hostile landscape of the Texas-Mexico border wanders the Kid\, a fourteen year-old Tennessean who is quickly swept up in the relentless tide of blood. But the apparent chaos is not without its order: while Americans hunt Indians – collecting scalps as their bloody trophies – they too are stalked as prey.

SUMMARY:Punctum Film Club #5: DIY short films
DESCRIPTION:This edition of PFC presents short films with DIY approach to filmmaking: 01:26:54\, a collaboration between anarchist collectives from Thessaloniki; Momentument by Prague collective Object Paradise and director Tyko Say; and 23:23 (Život jedna báseň\, není peříčko) by Czech director Kateřina Dudová. \n23:23 (Život jedna báseň\, není peříčko\, 2024\, Prague\, Czechia)We all perceive poetry differently. For some\, a poem is a rhyming text\, for others a metaphysical experience. For director Kateřina Dudová\, it is an experiment with three people who are close to her\, whom she places in one room for three days\, leaving them to their fate with the task of writing a poem. Sometimes the recording of real events is more poetic than the poem itself. \n“I was given the task of making a ‘film poem’\, but I hate poems\, so I’m looking for something… the feeling I want to get from poetry\, how I feel. What is a poem?” – Kateřina Dudová23mins\, CZ with EN subsDirected by Kateřina Dudová \nOBJECT:PRAHA IV : Momentument (2025\, Prague\, Czechia)If you could paint a state of mind\, would that be art\, or just a moment? Momentument is a 30-minute documentary exploring public authorship through collective creation & curation where no one is an artist outside of the immediate moment. Set to the rhythm of the Žižkov underground\, the film is part of the OBJECT:PRAHA series which aims to celebrate the subjective experience in creating together through community happenings\, curations\, and media. 27mins\, ENDirected by Tyko Say \n01:26:54 (2007\, Thessaloniki\, Greece)Vasilis\, a fanatical film lover and sharp critic\, tries to convince his environment that Leni Riefenstahl\, the Third Reich’s filmmaker\, was an overrated\, talentless beast and not a great female pioneer of the 7th art. So he puts “Triumph of the Will”\, Riefenstahl’s landmark film\, under the microscope\, and tries to discover its aesthetic “errors”. Things take an unexpected turn when he discovers that at 1 hour 26 minutes and 54 seconds into the film… \nThis short film was initiated by a group of non-experts (mainly from Thessaloniki collectives Fabrica Yfanet\, Machina and +technia-) who were aware of their limitations in terms of filmmaking. We explored this new terrain during a collectively organized production of 01:26:54. Using only basic equipment and without asking for financial sponsors or permission we would like to believe that we have contributed a short motion picture to one of the most significant ventures of our times: the fight against the inevitability of absolute order and control.25mins\, GR with EN subs \nVoluntary entry (recommended 100-200) \nPunctum Film Club screens international films once a month that are creative\, artistic\, and evoke a strange feeling in the audience. Whenever possible\, the film screenings will be followed by a discussion with the creators of the film\, providing space for the audience to ask questions\, share their thoughts\, and understand the perspectives of the artists.

SUMMARY:Honoring William Luers
DESCRIPTION:Friend of the Czech Republic\, Václav Havel\, and many other Czech and Slovak fighters for democracy\, William Luers\, who passed away a year ago\, would have turned 97 on May 15th. During his more than thirty-year long diplomatic career\, Bill Luers held\, among other positions\, the positions of Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and US Ambassador to Venezuela. In the years 1986-1999\, he served as the president of the world-renowned Metropolitan Museum in New York City. \nBill Luers played a particularly significant role as the ambassador during President Reagan’s administration. With the help of his wife\, Wendy Luers\, he initiated a cultural diplomacy program which enabled the greatest American writers and artists of the era to visit Czechoslovakia. He made the intimate environment of the American Embassy residence into a place that fostered meetings and discussions between his American visitors and prominent Czech and Slovak opposition intellectuals. It was thanks to these meetings that a vast cultural front of support for persecuted Czechoslovakian dissidents was created in the United States. The Luers continued to support the Czechoslovakian democratic transformation even after November 1989. \nThese events and others unforgettable stories will be recounted and remembered by the Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy in Prague\, David Wisner\, Michael Žantovský\, Alexandr Vondra (online)\, Martin Palouš (online)\, Cameron Munter\, Jolyon Naegele\, and\, in-person\, Wendy Luers. \nThe event will be conducted in English without interpretation.

SUMMARY:Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story: promítání filmu včetně diskuse se samotnou Královnou 2-tone
DESCRIPTION:Omezený počet vstupenek! \nPřijďte na dokumentární film o Pauline Black\, setkejte se s členy Mighty týmu a poslechněte si diskusi se samotnou Pauline a režisérkou dokumentu! \nUnikátní a ceněný dokument Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story mapuje čtyřicetiletou hudební kariéru Pauline a její neúnavné úsilí o rasovou rovnost.
