SUMMARY:: Who are We and Who Are We Not? Polish\, Slovak\, and Czech National Narratives
DESCRIPTION:Who are We and Who Are We Not? Complications and Contradictions of Polish\, Slovak\, and Czech National Narratives \nAre dominant Polish narratives still stuck in a noble imaginary that represses the memory of a wartime and post-WWII revolution that created the Polish middle class? Are Slovak national narratives still immersed in a bucolic ideal that has never fully come to terms with modern reality? Are Czech myth-makers perpetually beset by the contradictory sense of belonging to a Slavic East and belonging to a West that denies Eastern-ness?Join philosopher Andrzej Leder\, anthropologist Juraj Buzalka\, and historian Johana Kłusek in discussing how national narratives navigate between ideas of East and West\, past and modernity\, place and world. Moderated by Joe Grim Feinberg \nJuraj Buzalka is a social anthropologist at Comenius University and author of the 2023 book Postsedliaci: Slovenský ľudový protest (Post-Peasants: Slovak Folk Protest)\, described as “a merciless look at Slovaks” that “critically comments on our illusions about ourselves.” \nJohana Kłusek is a social and cultural historian Assistant Professor at Jagiellonian University\, specializing in discursive encounters between East and West in modern history. She is currently completing her first book\, which explores Czechoslovak Anglophilia during the turbulent 1940s. \nAndrzej Leder is a psychotherapist and philosopher of culture at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences\, and author of the 2014 influential book Prześniona rewolucja. Ćwiczenie z logiki (Sleepwalking through the Revolution: An Exercise in Historical Logic). His most recent book Ekonomia to stan umysłu (Economics is a State of Mind\, 2023) critically analyzes the semantics of economic language.

SUMMARY:A Hymn to Life: Shame has to Change Sides (Memoir) by Gisele Pelicot
DESCRIPTION:The Feminist Book Club meet to discuss the memoir by Gisele Pelicot. \nThe extraordinarily powerful memoir by a heroine of our times\, whose story inspires change\, compassion and courage. \nOne November day\, Gisèle Pelicot was called to a local police station and life as she knew it ended. Her husband of fifty years had been caught by a supermarket guard filming up women’s skirts. But on his computer was shattering evidence: for nearly a decade\, he had been secretly drugging and raping her and inviting dozens of strangers into their home to abuse her. \nFour years later\, he and fifty other men were put on trial and Gisèle’s courage in waiving her right to anonymity made global headlines. ‘Shame must change sides\,’ she declared\, giving voice and hope to millions. Her words became a rallying cry and her decision marked a turning point in public feeling about sexual violence. \nFor the first time\, and with unwavering honesty and grace\, she describes a difficult childhood\, first love\, her career and motherhood. It is a life in determined search of happiness\, both before and after her devastating discovery. She is an ordinary person who faces extraordinary catastrophe\, whose example changes the world. \nA Hymn to Life is an unforgettable testament and a promise. Its message is one of defiance and renewal – that victims have no reason to feel ashamed; that even after unimaginable betrayal we can go on; that the colour can come back to life. Ultimately\, Gisèle Pelicot emerges with a renewed passion and reverence for living\, and for love.

SUMMARY:Brian Goodman – The Nonconformists: American and Czech Writers across the Iron Curtain
DESCRIPTION:V úterý 28. dubna 2026 od 18 hodin vystoupí v dolním sále Ústavu pro českou literaturu AV ČR (Na Florenci 3\, Praha 1) Brian Goodman (Institute for Advanced Study\, Central European University; Arizona State University) s přednáškou nazvanou „The Nonconformists: American and Czech Writers across the Iron Curtain“. \nVstup na přednášku v angličtině je zdarma a bez registrace. \nAnotace:How did risky encounters between American and Czech writers in communist-era Prague shape the literary politics of the Cold War era? In the 1970s\, the novelist Philip Roth regularly visited “the city of Kafka\,” where he befriended Ivan Klíma\, Milan Kundera\, and Helena Klímová\, and established the influential paperback series “Writers from the Other Europe.” This is just one episode from a much wider history of literary exchange across the Iron Curtain. What can this history tell us about the translation of literature into dissent?

SUMMARY:Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo
DESCRIPTION:We usually discuss and arrange details in whatsapp – if you would like to join please message Lydia Titterington or email Prague Literary Calendar contact@pragueliterarycalendar.com\, and we can send you the link to join. \nA classic of Mexican modern literature about a haunted village. \nAs one enters Juan Rulfo’s legendary novel\, one follows a dusty road to a town of death. Time shifts from one consciousness to another in a hypnotic flow of dreams\, desires\, and memories\, a world of ghosts dominated by the figure of Pedro Páramo – lover\, overlord\, murderer. \nRulfo’s extraordinary mix of sensory images\, violent passions\, and unfathomable mysteries has been a profound influence on a whole generation of Latin American writers\, including Carlos Fuentes\, Mario Vargas Llosa\, and Gabriel García Márquez. To read Pedro Páramo today is as overwhelming an experience as when it was first published in Mexico back in 1955.

They want me to teach them\nhow it’s done. The best I can do is an invitation\n\nto jump over each other’s shadows instead. This satisfies them\nfor a moment and then the moment is gone. In sunlight\nmy shadow loves to give me a little dose of sorrow\,\n\nthe beams having traveled so far only for the lump of me\nto get between them and the ground. They came so close.\nIf I were the earth I would resent me too. My child\n\nhas gone into the next moment. I have to catch up. They say\nthey are riding a horse. They point and it drags them away.\n___________________________________________ \n\n\n\nLearning the Trees By Howard Nemerov \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore you can learn the trees\, you have to learn\nThe language of the trees. That’s done indoors\,\nOut of a book\, which now you think of it\nIs one of the transformations of a tree.\n\nThe words themselves are a delight to learn\,\nYou might be in a foreign land of terms\nLike samara\, capsule\, drupe\, legume and pome\,\nWhere bark is papery\, plated\, warty or smooth.\n\nBut best of all are the words that shape the leaves—\nOrbicular\, cordate\, cleft and reniform—\nAnd their venation—palmate and parallel—\nAnd tips—acute\, truncate\, auriculate.\n\nSufficiently provided\, you may now\nGo forth to the forests and the shady streets\nTo see how the chaos of experience\nAnswers to catalogue and category.\n\nConfusedly. The leaves of a single tree\nMay differ among themselves more than they do\nFrom other species\, so you have to find\,\nAll blandly says the book\, “an average leaf.”\n\nExample\, the catalpa in the book\nSprays out its leaves in whorls of three\nAround the stem; the one in front of you\nBut rarely does\, or somewhat\, or almost;\n\nMaybe it’s not catalpa? Dreadful doubt.\nIt may be weeks before you see an elm\nFanlike in form\, a spruce that pyramids\,\nA sweetgum spiring up in steeple shape.\n\nStill\, pedetemtim as Lucretius says\,\nLittle by little\, you do start to learn;\nAnd learn as well\, maybe\, what language does\nAnd how it does it\, cutting across the world\n\nNot always at the joints\, competing with\nExperience while cooperating with\nExperience\, and keeping an obstinate\nIntransigence\, uncanny\, of its own.\n\nThink finally about the secret will\nPretending obedience to Nature\, but\nInvidiously distinguishing everywhere\,\nDividing up the world to conquer it\,\n\nAnd think also how funny knowledge is:\nYou may succeed in learning many trees\nAnd calling off their names as you go by\,\nBut their comprehensive silence stays the same.\n______________________________________ \n\n\n\nI Am an Atheist Who Says His Prayers By Karl Shapiro \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI am an atheist who says his prayers.\n\nI am an anarchist\, and a full professor at that. I take the loyalty oath.\n\nI am a deviate. I fondle and contribute\, backscuttle and brown\, father of three.\n\nI stand high in the community. My name is in Who’s Who. People argue about my modesty.\n\nI drink my share and yours and never have enough. I free-load officially and unofficially.\n\nA physical coward\, I take on all intellectuals\, established poets\, popes\, rabbis\, chiefs of staff.\n\nI am a mystic. I will take an oath that I have seen the Virgin. Under the dry pandanus\, to the scratching of kangaroo rats\, I achieve psychic onanism. My tree of nerves electrocutes itself.\n\nI uphold the image of America and force my luck. I write my own ticket to oblivion.\n\nI am of the race wrecked by success. The audience brings me news of my death. I write out of boredom\, despise solemnity. The wrong reason is good enough for me.\n\nI am of the race of the prematurely desperate. In poverty of comfort I lay gunpowder plots. I lapse my insurance.\n\nI am the Babbitt metal of the future. I never read more than half of a book. But that half I read forever.\n\nI love the palimpsest\, statues without heads\, fertility dolls of the continent of Mu. I dream prehistory\, the invention of dye. The palms of the dancers’ hands are vermillion. Their heads oscillate like the cobra. High-caste woman smelling of earth and silk\, you can dry my feet with your hair.\n\nI take my place beside the Philistine and unfold my napkin. This afternoon I defend the Marines. I goggle at long cars.\n\nWithout compassion I attack the insane. Give them the horsewhip!\n\nThe homosexual lectures me brilliantly in the beer booth. I can feel my muscles soften. He smiles at my terror.\n\nPitchpots flicker in the lemon groves. I gaze down on the plains of Hollywood. My fine tan and my arrogance\, my gray hair and my sneakers\, O Israel!\n\nWherever I am I become. The power of entry is with me. In the doctor’s office a patient\, calm and humiliated. In the foreign movies a native\, shabby enough. In the art gallery a person of authority (there’s a secret way of approaching a picture. Others move off). The high official insults me to my face. I say nothing and accept the job. He offers me whiskey.\n\nHow beautifully I fake! I convince myself with men’s room jokes and epigrams. I paint myself into a corner and escape on pulleys of the unknown. Whatever I think at the moment is true. Turn me around in my tracks; I will take your side.\n\nFor the rest\, I improvise and am not spiteful and water the plants on the cocktail table.\n\n\n\n\n\n______________________________________________ \n\n\n\nMother to Son By Langston Hughes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWell\, son\, I’ll tell you:\nLife for me ain’t been no crystal stair.\nIt’s had tacks in it\,\nAnd splinters\,\nAnd boards torn up\,\nAnd places with no carpet on the floor—\nBare.\nBut all the time\nI’se been a-climbin’ on\,\nAnd reachin’ landin’s\,\nAnd turnin’ corners\,\nAnd sometimes goin’ in the dark\nWhere there ain’t been no light.\nSo boy\, don’t you turn back.\nDon’t you set down on the steps\n’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.\nDon’t you fall now—\nFor I’se still goin’\, honey\,\nI’se still climbin’\,\nAnd life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.\n\n\n\n\n\n________________________________ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Blood Meridian by Cormack McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:Set in the anarchic world opened up by America’s westward expansion\, Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is an epic and potent account of the barbarous violence that man visits upon man. Through the hostile landscape of the Texas-Mexico border wanders the Kid\, a fourteen year-old Tennessean who is quickly swept up in the relentless tide of blood. But the apparent chaos is not without its order: while Americans hunt Indians – collecting scalps as their bloody trophies – they too are stalked as prey.

SUMMARY:Punctum Film Club #5: DIY short films
DESCRIPTION:This edition of PFC presents short films with DIY approach to filmmaking: 01:26:54\, a collaboration between anarchist collectives from Thessaloniki; Momentument by Prague collective Object Paradise and director Tyko Say; and 23:23 (Život jedna báseň\, není peříčko) by Czech director Kateřina Dudová. \n23:23 (Život jedna báseň\, není peříčko\, 2024\, Prague\, Czechia)We all perceive poetry differently. For some\, a poem is a rhyming text\, for others a metaphysical experience. For director Kateřina Dudová\, it is an experiment with three people who are close to her\, whom she places in one room for three days\, leaving them to their fate with the task of writing a poem. Sometimes the recording of real events is more poetic than the poem itself. \n“I was given the task of making a ‘film poem’\, but I hate poems\, so I’m looking for something… the feeling I want to get from poetry\, how I feel. What is a poem?” – Kateřina Dudová23mins\, CZ with EN subsDirected by Kateřina Dudová \nOBJECT:PRAHA IV : Momentument (2025\, Prague\, Czechia)If you could paint a state of mind\, would that be art\, or just a moment? Momentument is a 30-minute documentary exploring public authorship through collective creation & curation where no one is an artist outside of the immediate moment. Set to the rhythm of the Žižkov underground\, the film is part of the OBJECT:PRAHA series which aims to celebrate the subjective experience in creating together through community happenings\, curations\, and media. 27mins\, ENDirected by Tyko Say \n01:26:54 (2007\, Thessaloniki\, Greece)Vasilis\, a fanatical film lover and sharp critic\, tries to convince his environment that Leni Riefenstahl\, the Third Reich’s filmmaker\, was an overrated\, talentless beast and not a great female pioneer of the 7th art. So he puts “Triumph of the Will”\, Riefenstahl’s landmark film\, under the microscope\, and tries to discover its aesthetic “errors”. Things take an unexpected turn when he discovers that at 1 hour 26 minutes and 54 seconds into the film… \nThis short film was initiated by a group of non-experts (mainly from Thessaloniki collectives Fabrica Yfanet\, Machina and +technia-) who were aware of their limitations in terms of filmmaking. We explored this new terrain during a collectively organized production of 01:26:54. Using only basic equipment and without asking for financial sponsors or permission we would like to believe that we have contributed a short motion picture to one of the most significant ventures of our times: the fight against the inevitability of absolute order and control.25mins\, GR with EN subs \nVoluntary entry (recommended 100-200) \nPunctum Film Club screens international films once a month that are creative\, artistic\, and evoke a strange feeling in the audience. Whenever possible\, the film screenings will be followed by a discussion with the creators of the film\, providing space for the audience to ask questions\, share their thoughts\, and understand the perspectives of the artists.

SUMMARY:Honoring William Luers
DESCRIPTION:Friend of the Czech Republic\, Václav Havel\, and many other Czech and Slovak fighters for democracy\, William Luers\, who passed away a year ago\, would have turned 97 on May 15th. During his more than thirty-year long diplomatic career\, Bill Luers held\, among other positions\, the positions of Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and US Ambassador to Venezuela. In the years 1986-1999\, he served as the president of the world-renowned Metropolitan Museum in New York City. \nBill Luers played a particularly significant role as the ambassador during President Reagan’s administration. With the help of his wife\, Wendy Luers\, he initiated a cultural diplomacy program which enabled the greatest American writers and artists of the era to visit Czechoslovakia. He made the intimate environment of the American Embassy residence into a place that fostered meetings and discussions between his American visitors and prominent Czech and Slovak opposition intellectuals. It was thanks to these meetings that a vast cultural front of support for persecuted Czechoslovakian dissidents was created in the United States. The Luers continued to support the Czechoslovakian democratic transformation even after November 1989. \nThese events and others unforgettable stories will be recounted and remembered by the Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy in Prague\, David Wisner\, Michael Žantovský\, Alexandr Vondra (online)\, Martin Palouš (online)\, Cameron Munter\, Jolyon Naegele\, and\, in-person\, Wendy Luers. \nThe event will be conducted in English without interpretation.

SUMMARY:Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story: promítání filmu včetně diskuse se samotnou Královnou 2-tone
DESCRIPTION:Omezený počet vstupenek! \nPřijďte na dokumentární film o Pauline Black\, setkejte se s členy Mighty týmu a poslechněte si diskusi se samotnou Pauline a režisérkou dokumentu! \nUnikátní a ceněný dokument Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story mapuje čtyřicetiletou hudební kariéru Pauline a její neúnavné úsilí o rasovou rovnost.
