SUMMARY:Prague Fringe: Kaddish (How to be a Sanctuary)
DESCRIPTION:Care to learn how to curse in Yiddish and witness a reckoning between a Jewish grandson going to do solidarity work in Palestine and his long-passed on grandfather who fought the Nazis in World War II? “Kaddish (how to be a sanctury)” premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2025 was met with the prestigious Bobby Award by Broadway Baby who praised its “profound writing\, imaginative staging and precise direction” and its “[invitation] to listen to the moral inheritance of our ancestors.” The play uses the real archival journals of playwright/performer Sam’s grandpa Saul N. Sherman – a Jewish WWII vet from New Jersey and intersperses it with Sam’s own writing.  Sam and his dead grandpa have a conversation about everything from resisting fascism to growing up with mobsters – all with the help of a mystical creature from Yiddish folklore.

Drawing inspiration from Auguste Rodin’s The Gates of Hell\, this project flips the images of Adam and two shadows depicted at the gates of hell. If\, according to Rodin’s conceptualisation\, men descend into hell due to women and their desires\, then what kind of gateway will Eve and her past and future construct? \nIn this project\, three female performers—Emiko Agatsuma\, experienced in Japanese Butoh; Yu-Chiao Chen\, a professional dancer; and Jia-Yi Chen\, a theater actor—each bring their diverse backgrounds and professional careers spanning their 20s\, 30s\, and 40s. With their respective expertise in Japanese Butoh\, contemporary dance\, and theatrical performance\, under the guidance of choreographer Po-Yuan Chung\, they will explore the intentions behind the text and sculpture through a dialogue of heterogeneous bodies.
