Trying to finish a creative project is a battle. It’s a mix of struggle, self-imposed pressure, and wondering why I even bother. Today, I’m getting honest about it.
This Sunday, I’m editing my play. I have a deadline: a draft to friends by July 14th, aiming for a stage-ready piece by August 1st. It’s a push. Writing is hard. It’s arduous. I’m a champion procrastinator. So, I’m writing this blog post instead.
I’ve told everyone I know about this play. It’s my own punishment, a way to force myself across the finish line. I even slightly hate myself for it. But I know the pride and achievement on the other side will make it worth it. Peer pressure is my only motivator.
This project will be a use-case for the Prague Literary Calendar. I want our calendar to be like a flexible university timetable. A place to find “seminars”—our listed events—to help you chip away at your own projects. Finishing this play will show how our calendar can be a tool for personal accomplishment, without sacrificing your whole life for it.
The Calendar’s Own Messy Start
The Prague Literary Calendar began from a simple, personal place. I just wanted a poetry book club. Something low-effort where people could engage with poetry. Poetry is a gift; it helps us live, soothes us when we need it. I wanted our gatherings to be free of ego, a vulnerable space, like group therapy. A place a single mother could dip into, to spark creativity and intellect, to break up her week.
I once booked my poetry night on the same evening as another event. That’s why we needed a calendar to know where things were. Mark worked on a Prague Activities calendar in G-Suite, and voilà, here we are.
My Own Creative Journey
My journey back into writing picked up because of the Prague Literary Calendar. The idea for my play came from a prompt during a Scribbles and Giggles session. That writing group is supportive and kind. It gave me 40 minutes to just explore my mind, without needing to be “good.” That freedom reignited my love for writing. Each session, I saw ideas emerge from my subconscious, understanding what affected me.
After that spark, I took my play to the Globe Writers group. Their feedback helped me gain clarity. Now, it’s with the Drama Queens. Their input confirms it: a complete redraft is needed.
I wanted this post to be honest about the writing process. I might not finish this play. I might miss my deadlines. It might never make it to a stage. But I have to try. The value is in the trying, the learning, and the pushing. And the Prague Literary Calendar is here to help others find their own path through that beautiful, messy process too.
