Roots of Contact Improvisation – with available collective

Roots of contact improvisation is a dance course for those who want to practice the basics this dance form, enrich their physical skills and learn the context of the practice.
We will provide technical exercises from ground to standing level, training ways of falling and rising to flying… We’ll combine somatic as well as acrobatic approaches. Also, we will study the context of the practice (offering readings, videos and other documentation).
“Contact Improvisation is an evolving system of movement initiated in 1972 by American choreographer Steve Paxton. The improvised dance form is based on the communication between two moving bodies that are in physical contact and their combined relationship to the physical laws that govern their motion—gravity, momentum, inertia. The body, in order to open to these sensations, learns to release excess muscular tension and abandon a certain quality of willfulness to experience the natural flow of movement. Practice includes rolling, falling, being upside down, following a physical point of contact, supporting and giving weight to a partner.” – contactquarterly.com

The course is for a closed group of maximum 14 participants.

– What to bring:
Recommended to bring some water, comfortable clothes and a notebook (something where to write your notes). We will dance barefoot or in socks.
– When?: Wednesdays, 18:30 – 20:30
Open classes: 16th and 23rd of September
Course: 16th of September – 9th of December
(no class on the 28th of October)

After finishing my studies in dance, I’ve been freelancing as a contemporary dance performer between Spain, Budapest and Prague. I’ve been working with different companies and creating my own work, as well as offering workshops and classes. Instant composition and Contact Improvisation are especially exciting for me.

About Tomáš:
Tomáš Wortner finished his studies at Theatre Academy in Brno. He is a freelance performer, dancer and facilitator. He has spent 3 years in the Grotowski Institute, intensively researching performativity of a human body. He is founder of Available Collective which creates a open, aware and bold space for art. In past he performed with Studio Matejka Company, Manus Art Collective.Plus two invited musicians to be agreed.

⭐About Available Collective:
Available collective is an international team of creators working in the field of physical theatre, dance and music. We are interested in performance as a way of immediate communication and interaction: on stage and in relationship with the audience. Our first project was Performance Dance Jam in 2021, a work on the border between dance and physical theater that arises as an improvised dialogue between creators in interaction with the audience. Currently, we conduct workshops and courses in Prague, Wroclaw, London, Sofia and other places.
